Guna
The Guna people, one of the most visible groups in Panama, live on the east coast of the Caribbean and in the Guna Yala archipelago (San Blas Islands). With about 62,000 people, the Guna have established an economy based on fishing, agriculture and trade. Their independence is reflected in their semi-autonomous status within Panama. The “mola”, an intricately woven cloth panel, is one of the most prominent cultural elements of the Guna. These designs represent sacred animals and cosmogonic myths. In Guna Yala, visitors can experience Guna culture, enjoy local cuisine and stay in traditional huts. To reach the islands, you must take an all-terrain vehicle from Panama City for approximately 3 hours and then a short boat ride to the island of your choice.
