Casco Antiguo

Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1997, Casco Antiguo (or Old Town) is the historic heart of Panama. Below, you will discover some of its most iconic places, which are all located in this picturesque area full of history, culture and art. In Panama’s Casco Antiguo, you will find several emblematic squares that are part of its history and charm: Plaza de la Independencia, Plaza Bolívar, Plaza de Francia, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Herrera and Plazoleta Medio Baluarte. In addition, there are religious monuments and architecture of great historical value, such as the Church of San José, famous for its Golden Altar, the Church of San Francisco de Neri, the Church of La Merced, the Jesuit Convent and the Santo Domingo Convent. Also, the Casco Antiguo is home to important official buildings, including the National Palace, the Palacio de las Garzas (seat of the Presidency of the Republic), the Palace of the Ministry of Government and Justice, the National Theater, the Bolivar Palace, the National Institute of Culture, the Municipal Palace and the Municipality House.
